black ink
On-Yomi: ボク — Kun-Yomi: すみ
Elements:
black ink, black, computer, oven-fire, barbecue
Heisig story:
Besides meaning black ink, this kanji also appears in the word for an inked string that is pulled taut and snapped to mark a surface, much the same as one might used a chalked string. Here it is used to mark off the dirt with black lines for a foot ballgame (played, I presume, on a white field).
Koohii stories:
1) [mameha1977] 1-8-2007(157): Theres BLACK on the GROUND…most likely someone spilt some black ink.
2) [oliviergirard] 1-2-2007(70): Anyone who has worked with laserjet ink cartridges will know the black ink looks like powdered dirt.
3) [sprutnik] 17-10-2008(63): Black ink comes from black soil.
4) [elktapestry] 25-3-2007(21): Charred bamboo is an essential ingredient in certain types of sumi ink. Imagine that the old さと that burnt down was composed primarily of bamboo houses and structures… thus, residents of the new さと often return to those old grounds to scoop up the charred remains from the soil in order to make thier black ink.
5) [lifeflaw] 1-12-2008(10): Before mixing with a liquid, black ink looks like black soil!
