ashes

On-Yomi: カイ — Kun-Yomi: はい

Elements:

ashes, cliff, fire

Heisig story:

The kanji for ashes naturally includes the primitive for fire, or more specifically, a fireplace. Now what do you do with that bucket of ashes you have just cleaned out of the fireplace? You walk to the edge of a cliff and tip it upside down, watching as they are swept away in the wind like a swarm of gray mosquitoes. Thus the fire, once it has turned to ashes, ends up at the bottom of the cliff.

Koohii stories:

1) [Christine_Tham] 18-8-2007(125): The fire underneath the cliff will eventually turn everything above to ashes.

2) [Ninjasha] 2-2-2008(83): After the cremation fire, many prefer to scatter their loved-one's ASHES from seaside cliffs.

3) [fuaburisu] 9-8-2007(57): Scene from "The Big Lebowski" : Walter scatters Donny's ashes, but a wind blows much of the ashes into "The Dude" Lebowski's face. Upset, The Dude lashes out at Walter. Walter apologizes and hugs The Dude, before suggesting "Fuck it, man. Let's go bowling." I bet you that The Dude wanted to cremate (fire) Walter right there and then, at the top of the cliff! (thanks Elktapestry).

4) [kirihitokiri] 9-3-2008(21): After fire erupts from under the cliffs (volcano) everything is covered in ashes. Thnx khooks!

5) [khooks] 13-6-2006(11): After fire erupts from the ground (volcano) the cliffs will be covered in ashes.
