On-Yomi: ヘン — Kun-Yomi: あた.り、ほと.り、-べ
Elements:
environs, dagger, sword, road
Heisig story:
To keep the environs clean and safe, you could cement daggers in the road, blades pointed upwards, so that no polluting traffic could pass by. You could, if you were an ecologically-minded terrorist.
Koohii stories:
1) [radical_tyro] 18-4-2007(205): Caution: this kanji doesn't mean environment; it means "environs; boundary; border; vicinity". To separate the environs, create the border by placing daggers on the road.
2) [mdspencer] 19-1-2009(122): To protect the environs around their village, samurai would travel the roads with their swords.
3) [romanrozhok] 11-6-2008(18): This kanji means area, vicinity. Such as this or that area. STORY: My mom told me not to go across the ROAD because the kids on the other side use drugs and carry KNIVES.
4) [grubin30] 8-6-2009(12): Caution: this kanji doesn't mean environment; it means "environs; boundary; border; vicinity". To separate the environs, create the border by placing daggers on the road. Imagine cars trying to cross and having their tires popped. Stand there wagging your finger: "This is my house!".
5) [dwhitman] 27-11-2007(6): Protect the environs by patrolling the road with your dagger. I tend to mistakenly put the abbreviated version of the sword primitive in this kanji.
